One of our very own is moving after this quarter to a new country. Look at the roo to the left and then guess where she might be headed...no, not to a zoo. It's to Australia, mate!
Here's what I want you to think about. What does it mean to move to a new country? Have you ever made that move? What sorts of issues were there for you? If you have not, what do you imagine would make it difficult? What would excite you about the prospect? You might miss people if you moved, but what else of your original country would you miss? Let's use this blog space to brainstorm so that our future expatriate can prepare her mind for the journey.

Well moving to Australia sounds like a lot of fun! But moving to another country can be hard especially when you don't know the language they speak there. Even when you do know the language it can be difficult. I know spanish but going down to mexico they speak different forms of spanish in TJ then they do in Puerto Rico. Have fun!
I was born in Mexico and moved here when i was only 3 so i dont remember my childhood from there. It was an easy transition for me because i was so young and barely learning things so i learned them in both languages.
For me, moving to the US was actually a big deal. A bigger deal than I expected. You hear the typical stuff about the US like it's a free country and whatsoever. Anyway, even though I know the language well and even though I've been to the US so many times it was something complete different I had to get used to. I thought I knew Bakersfield and its "issues" well, but I was completely wrong. Soon I realized that the menatality and especially the political point of views were different here. Moreover, just little things like opening a bank account made me doubting myself, and emphasised my longing for a system I had growing up with.Even though I consider myself as an outgoing person, finding new friends and getting into the daily routine wasn't that easy. This adjustment took me a while, even longer than I expected.
Overall, I think that moving to a different country is a long and difficult procedure. However, new impressions and experiences help you bridging homesickness and even expand your horizon. For me, it was just a matter of patience compared with self-confidence and the will to go through this.
Moving to a whole different country sounds like fun, but can be hard as well. Fun because you get to see new and different things. Also meet new people, and eat different foods. And hard because you are going to miss your old home and old friends, but I really suggest just to have fun and expieriance as many things as you can.
Moving to a differnt country can be difficult in the sense that maybe you wouldnt be able to communicate with others if they speak a different language. Also not knowing anyone and having to make new friends could be scary. Some people find making friends to be difficult. But overall, it depends on the person who is moving
Moving has its advantages and disadvantages. I think moving to a new country would be fun because of the experience and the opportunity to start fresh. The disadvange is that your leaving your family and homebase, which for some is not an easy task, especially if you love your home. FOr the most part I would enjoy moving to another country because I have lived in the same place all my life and I think it would be a great experience not only to grow from but also because it would be a great challenge.
The biggest move that I've made is from Los Angeles to Bakersfield. I can't say it's the same, but I can definately relate. Even in LA I had difficulty adjusting due to the fact that I was taught in spanish through out most of elementary so language barrier would definately be a disadvantage when moving to a foreign country. On the bright side you get to meet new people and start over. Well California is one of the most diverse states in the U.S. and there are several differences in the people in respect on how they think and how they act. I think that once you move you miss everything from where you came from even the things that you take for granted.
Moving to a different country could be difficult because the language and meeting new people. Even though I have not move to a far place, but I know that I will be homesick. I would still move to a different country, but I would only visit. Moving to a different country sound fun but also hard because the whole different environment.
I think moving to a different country sounds exiting. Yeah, i know things may be difficult at first especially if you go by yourself or you dont know the language. I guess it all depends how you look at it. For me it would be an adventure since i love to travel.experiencing different cultures is fascinating. If i were to leave, i dont think i would miss anything or anyone other than my family and friends.
To move to another country would mean to me new opportunities and challenges. In addition, i would be optimistic about moving to another country. Moreover, some of the challenges that I think I would find difficult is not speaking the native language. Also, I would miss my friends, and family.
I lived in this area my whole life. If I were moving to another city in the United States, I wouldn't find it difficult settling in; however, moving to another country is a whole new ball game. For me, the struggles that I would have to face are to adjust to the time change, learn the laws, the history, the language, and make new friends. I think I would be okay moving to another country as long as I have people that I love with me rather than just moving alone. I'll miss the American food here, but moving to another country would be an exciting adventure. I was also considering about moving to another country in a few years, but it'll just have to wait. Oh, and what are the facts about the toilet flushing the other way around? I heard it flushes straight down. The water is pushed directly in the hole and I also heard that the Australian toilets have two buttons to flush half and whole flushes. Pretty amazing haha
To move from a country to another country, especially from orient to western country, I am sure that there is a big culture shock. I moved from China to the United States and now I am used to be the American lifestyle, but I am still missing my home country life.
The big changes mean that you must have an open mind to accept new things with good adaptability.
Moving also means that you need establish your new social network connection, because your old friends are far away from you. So before you become well socialized in the new environment, sometimes maybe you will feel lonely and get homesick.
I gues that what I would miss most from this country is the availability of thgings that we have and many basic freedoms that we take for granted. I believe that the most difficult thing for me wouldw be getting used to how other people speak, like different ways of saying the same thing and how others think differently.
I moved to another country. It was not easy as I thought it would be. First few months everything in new and nice and you think you moved to a perfect place. After those few months you realize that it is not that nice. You go trough cultural shock and you realize how different people are. Then you start missing your friends and family and you want to go back. You try to stay for few more months and you find some good friends. And after spending almost a year at one place it becomes your home. You get use to it and you start to like your new home.
that is true about the toilets; there are two buttons one for a half flush and another for a full flush! they also don't go the other way, they just go straight down.
thankfully they speak english there so I've overcome the language barrier!
i am very excited to be interacting with a completely different culture (after a month there i got a little culture shock, but then it wore off) so I'm hoping that it does the same thing again.
I know that I'm going to miss all my friends and family here in the states and i won't see them hardly ever and that does sadden me but i am moving with my whole family, so I'm not doing this alone and going to be by myself.
if i could change one thing about my life right now it would be what i have here but over there..... but ya right that's going to happen so i have to pick one or the other.
Well Moving to a new country might be really exciting for some people, but for others it might be difficult....for me it would be really exciting because i have lived my entire life in a small place...so i would love to go to a new country were you are new and nobody knows you...the only advice that i would give to people is that, where ever they go no matter where it is, they will do fine as long as they be who they really are :)...
I think moving to another country would be very difficult. It would be hard adjusting to their rules like not being able to have freedom of speech or any freedom at all. Also, you have to be prepared to see different situations than your used to. You might not see everyone living in houses as other countries are quite poor. Also, there is no time to get used to their way of life as your just thrown right into it. You definitely need to be committed to your beliefs and the way you run your life as change to a new country can force you to quickly have doubt.
I think to move to another country would be really scary. My roomate right now is actually from England, so I know how people feel when they move to a different country. At first he was very interested in everything about America. He was so surprised about everything different and seemed to embrace it. These past few weeks though, you can tell he is starting to miss home. You can tell this by him saying things like..."In England we do this..." The hardest part for him I believe is when we go out to a restaurant and he has to repeat what he got about 4 times because of his accent! I think sometime in the future I would like to move to Spain and see how I would handle in another country.
i see moving as starting over, a way to get away from what you were and possibly becoming a different person, better person. i see moving as a way to grow, and a way to experience more and learn more.
but i can understand how moving to a new country with a new language and a new culture and how difficult that could be.
i think the main problem in moving to a new country would be the language and the customs there. ive heard that eating ice cream and walkin at the same time is very disrespectful in japan. i would probally miss my house, pets, car, and maybe the weather
I think moving to another country would be very difficult and scary. It would be very hard to adapt and learn their culture. Not knowing what people were saying would make me very uncomfortable. But, moving to another country would be a very rewarding experience! I hope I can go out of the country for a visit!
Moving to another country would be both an exciting and scary experience. It would be fun to visit new places, try new foods, and meet new people. But I would hate to have to deal with a language barrier and I'm sure that I would miss my friends and family at home.
I've never moved anywhere but i can imagine how hard it must be. Adapting to new surroundings and trying to fit in into a different culture doesn't sound like an easy task. I'd definitely be scared to move away to a foreign place especially if i was by myself.
Australia sounds like so much fun, but visiting is one thing and actually moving there is another. I was born and raised in this country and have never moved elswhere. I imagine it to be very dificult. When traveling i miss home and my friends and family i cant imagine myself away from them. I would be sad, but if it was a place where i really wanted to be then the transition shouldnt be too bad.
It must be really hard to move. For me, ive only moved once and it wasnt even to a different country. It was just the next county over. id assume that when you move to a different country, you'd have to grow used to the customs of that new country. Food, religion, and language barriers can be an issue at first, but once you learn to adapt tp these things, it might be a fun experience to move to a different country.
Moving to a different country would be difficult making new friends meeting new people, but a vacation or visit would be nice. its hard to move to a new home when you have already a home and area you've lived in for so long and gotten comfortable with. That change would be hard and i like the area i live in right now and wouldn't want to move anywhere else the south bay! So cal!
This is ironic. I just had one of the longest dreams last night about this. Possibly due to the episode of True Life I watched yesterday titled "I'm new in town. " An american family moved to new zeleand. I personally it would kinda cool, intersting none the less. But different. Then, of course, I would miss USA. I love it here, I believe there is no better place, but then again it's mine opinion.
I moved to bakersfield three years ago. It wasnt easy for me. on my sophomore year I made enemies over some guys. Then my jr year I moved schools. oh thats nothing I went to three different High schools. In my Neighborhood you could always hear people fighting screaming even gun shots. a couple of months ago they shot some kid and my neighborhood was on the news. The worst part of all we had to get used to this strange weather one day its extremely hot the next its freezing with thunderstorms and heavy rain. Even after all the bad experiences Bakersfield is growing on me I love it more than North Hollywood now. everytime I go there Its full of traffic people doing weird things in the streets and the city looks old now.
I've been confined in Bakersfield all my life and I'm pretty sure I'd go into shock if I moved out of here.. let alone another country. I think It'd be awesome though
i actually think moving sounds fun and exhilerating! Going to completly new place, meeting new people, and to try and get used to the people around you. but at the same time, it would be sad. I'm big on food! if i were to move to another country, the food would probably be completly different. i imagine they'd have the same type, but i bet it probably wouldn't taste the same.
