Academic Writing

How is writing in a typical "academic" setting different from the many other writing settings we've written in this quarter?

A typical academic settings sounds formal and elaborate, whereas the other writing settings we've been through were random autobiographies, multi-genre blog entries, restaurant reviews, Dear Abby letters; I believe these weren't academic because they did not have a cover page nor citations of resources. But I could be wrong...

"Academic Setting" sounds more intellectual ands adds some type of pressure because it has certain standards that must be followed. The type of writing that we'ved done is more random that allows us to be more out spoken.

I believe that academic writing is from an objective point of view. When you rite an acadamic essay you focus on academic knowledge. You might try to porvea point or elaborate the subject. Furthermore, I believe that only the conclusion of an academic writing should imply your personal point of view. The writings we've done in class are more subjective. We wrote down what we had in mind withouth doing any research. We told stories, wrote poems, and critized restaurants.

A typical "academic" setting implies us students to follow rules, have limitations to our writing, and boundaries. The setting is different from the writings we have done in class such as the following: Dear Abby letters, watching youtube videos and writing about them, and random journal entries. Our writing setting in class is similar to free writing and brain storming. We don't worry about errors; we keep on writing.

i really don't enjoy academic writing at all. there are so many rules that have to be followed; but the writing we do in class is much more casual and i enjoy it.

Academic writings are formal essays or research papers. The writings we have done the most in class, are still academic yet a more casual setting throughout blogs, profiles, reviews, and our creation stories. Writing is writing, but there are many different styles used in different settings.

A typical "academic" setting sounds like formal writing. Writing with specific rules and guide lines that must be followed. Whereas the writing we have been doing in class is more casual and fun. It has been more about having good ideas than writing structure.

Academic writing is basically what is required from school standards, which includes restrictions on what we write. The writing we've been doing in class is more like free write, we dont have that many restrictions I think this type of writing makes us learn more than your basic standard writing becasue we actually are enjoy what we write, which will stay with us longer.

Simply when we were in class its fun, you hear others discussing things, you hear giggling and laughing. What teacher tells you to go find a place on campus and right a spooky story?!?! No one except you!!! When I think of an academic setting, I think of “shh” sit down, put your head in a book, and do your work. BORING! No one wants their head stuck in a book, at least I surely don’t!

I think Academic Writing is more formal and involves more background research and more in depth information. The writings we have been doing in class, are just excercises to help keep are minds sharp and jot our thoughts down on paper while dealing with correct punctuation, grammar, and spelling.

Academic writing has higher standards than the writing we have been doing in class. I think academic writing has much more research, correct grammar, and a stronger vocabluary. We have been doing more free writing and gradually adding elements of academic writing.

The writing we have been doing is more about what is going down on the paper rather than how it is going down on the paper. It is more of getting the information and the point across rather than all of the little picky things.

This quarter has given us the freedom to actually enjoy writing. Too much structure, which is what typical academic settings have, are just boring and unenjoyable. Thanks for that:)

Academic writing can be fun when you feel strongly on one side of the issue or other but when you aren't knowledgeable it becomes boring and you make up crap just to meet requirements. In our class writings we basically have free write on our papers.

Well i think that the difference is that we been doing more free writing then anything else...but its better like this because its easier for us and we actually learn more...we get to describe things our own way and as much deatail as we need to prove our own point...i think that academic writing is the kind of wirting that the school wants us to write...school has a certain procces and that would fit in the category of academic writing....yup yup....

For me it is harder to wite in "academic" form because its more structured and formal. Free writing is easier and more fun because you dont necessarily have to prove a point, its just your opinion, more like a personal journal than an educational essay.

Academic writing follows a certain format for example like an essay where as creative writing does not. Poems, journals, and short stories are a free flow of ideas that are writing spontaniously. Academic writing is planned out. Some brainstorming and pre-writing is needed to formulate good ideas and evidence to support your main topic sentence. Creative writing is narrative and academic writing is your thoughts and opinions on one specific topic.

A academic setting sounds boring and a lot of work like research and boring quotes, unlike the work we have been doing it mainly involves what our brains think on a subject and its easier to write because its what we think no ones going to say our opinion is wrong

Academic writing tends to be very formal and precise because you have to sound credible and believable. While the writing we do in class is free form and there is no pressure to sound perfect. When writing in free form we can write the way we talk and write what we are thinking about. Free form writing is much more enjoyable to write and read compared to academic writing.

Academic writing makes you follow a certain format and usually you have to write about something specific. The writing we have done this quarter allowed us to be more free and write on subjects with our own voice and make it more personal.

The types of writing we've been doing were casual, informal. It didn't have standard forms. It required brainstorming, imagination and creativity. The audience scope could be very wide. It didn't require scientific, scholarly sources to support the ideas in our writings. Academic writing is a formal and serious type of writing. It has to follow the standard forms, such as essay, research paper, etc. It requires knowledge and scholarly sources to support the ideas or arguments. The audience scope is narrower. It requires the writer to use critical thinking to clearly state the serious topic with adequate detail.

a typical academic setting is very boring and stressful the writing that we have done this quarter is very fun and imaginative. also the writing is more related to things and skills we would use in everyday life. i belive that the writing we do is alot more benificial because its real writing.

i feel that academic writing limits ideas, so its hard to be creative when writing. i really liked writing about the lost tribe and the group of men sitting on a beam high off the ground, because we were free to come up with our own ideas

Academic writing is different from the kind of writing we do in class because the class writing is more creative and explores us to various genres of writing rather than just informational or opinionated essays.

Writing that we have been writing on this class gave us freedom of imagination. It differs from standard academic writing in a way that it is not limited to certain format. Most of the subjects we have written were picked and created by us. Academic writing usually goes towards some topic that students are not interested in. If student is not interested in subject he will not give his true opinion therefore he will write something only because he has to do so. Writing in this class gave us possibility to write about something that we like. It is different from academic writing because I was not trying to satisfy all the regulations of academic standard writing. I was just trying to make writing more interesting to a reader.

Writing in a typical "academic" setting is different from the many other writing settings we've written in this quarter, because in academic settings there is more structure and formality. In the writing settings we've written this quarter t made you think in a different perspective. Moreover, the writings that we have been doing dont conceal our true thougts. We also dont write the same stereotype papers that readers are accustomed to reading. Also there was no wrong or right answers to most of the topics that we wrote about.

The kind of writting we did in class was more of open free writing that invovled most often then not, our backround. this made writing a lot funner and easy to write. i believe academic writing is like the final assignment. your given topics and we have to write in a strucured way
