AID TO AFRICA?

Ok, this comes out of a discussion with my brother, but I guess it's still worth putting in our venerable space. So, I believe in helping others, giving to charity, helping the needy. Our nation, in fact, does more of this than any nation on earth. We give 15 billion dollars a year (that's a lot of "honey") to Africa. Here's the problem. Almost none of it gets to the people. Most of it simply lines the pockets of the wealthy leaders and warlords. Here's the question: should we still be giving this aid to Africa?

I think that its just as any other charity work from the government, nothing goes to those who need it. Unfortunately we live in a corrupt world where everything needs to be supervised by others so unless someone keeps an eye on where the money goes that just adds to the wasted tax dollars. It would help if organizations were created for this purpose. In addition I think before we help others we should start by helping ourselves. This might be the land of the free, but that does not mean we are immune to problems especially now that we are short on funds.

No, absolutely not! We need to be taking care of our own people. It's bad enough we involve ourselves in other countries business, but to actually give money to another country is ludacris. Oprah gives them enough money as it is. It's her money, she earned it, but in my opinion, we need to work on our countries problems first. How can we help others when we have such a hard time helping ourselves.

Right off the bat should we give money to Africa, the answer is NO. BUT I still think we need to find a way for those that actually need the money to GET THE MONEY!!! BUT then again, we aren’t helping out the homeless or poor people here in the United States, BUT again we have people on welfare abusing welfare and all its “perks.” That’s a touchy subject, cause my cousins husband has cancer, and had chemo, and radiation, but is still unable to work even though he has been in remission for almost 2 years. He is just too weak to work, and he almost lost his arm do to a blood clot, BUT NO ONE IS HELPING THEM!!! The government, and all there financial issues aren’t helping my family. My cousin works for the county and does as much as she can, and she has a 2 year old, (my nephew)  my retired uncle has gone back to work to get extra money, my aunt went from working 2 days a week to working 5 days a week almost 10 hours a day, just to support her daughter/ my cousin… I think people can only help others so much, but they don’t think about the people directly around them. You can only help others if you help yourself.

We should stop giving money to Africa especially because the people who deserve it don't get it. We should find ways to help our own country within, then when we get that situated and figured out, then we can possibly go and help others. But that probably won't happen for a while. It is sad situation as I have to agree with Sarah. So many people abuse the money and those who have cancer and other things like that don't get any money at all. So to make it short, only give money to people in America and make sure only those who really need the money actually get the money.

I would have to say no because the whole reason we are giving the money to afica is to help out the people. So if the money isnt getting to the people we should maybe use the money here for food or whatever else and have people or like an organization go to afica and make sure that the people are getting whatever it is they need.

Everybody has heard of this quote:

"Give A Man A Fish, Feed Him For A Day. Teach A Man To Fish, Feed Him For A Lifetime" -Lao Tzu

i guess it makes sense..heh

I agree with some of these people. We need to focus on ourselves before we start helping others. Its sad not to help them but its part of life. Our country is already in debt and here we are giving money away, which like you said the people who need the money arent even recieving it.

I think we should still give aid to Africa. I don't see anything wrong with helping others and the people in Africa obviously need help. The aid needs to be better managed though. There should be a way to get the money directly to the people who need it. But if the government is not going to make sure the money gets to the ones who need it, then I don't believe we should be giving "aid".

I think we should. Even if the wealthy leaders and warlords get it. This way when the are in great problem they wont say that we didnt help them. So the problem will be on their heads. Because we helped them but they decided to do other stuff with that money. So if they have problems they better not be rushing to us and blaming us for their problems.

I believe that the government should be more aware of where the money is going. If they know that the money is going into the pockets of the wrong people then why are they still helping. Money is money and if they know their not actually helping Africa but giving away free money to those who don't need it, well then what about our problems in our country?

This topic is such a controversial one. The U.S. wants to help a foreign continent such as Africa, but we need help within our states as well. Though we do need the help, does Africa need it more? If the U.S. can find a way to send aid to Africa even with the crisis the U.S. faces itself, then maybe it shouldn't be in the form of cash. Maybe the U.S. could send shipments of food, medicine, or maybe even rescue villages from the threats of warlords. Too much? It may sound like a lot but it might even turn out as a better outcome than having the money just thrown away.

We should not send money to Africa. Instead we should send other things ie; food, or other types of aid. The fact that the main population does not recieve the money is not right and should action be taken place? I know the commercials that tell you to dontate $.60 a day can help a young child but really it might just go to the orphanage or to the "upper class" of Africa. Food, medicine and other things should be sent instead of us wasting out money that could be used to help the needy here. Because we do have a lot of needy here. Its a bigger problem than we think.

if the money isnt reaching the people that need it, then i say we stop giving africa all that money, and instead give them food, clothing, and medicine. even then i really dont know, since our economys doing so bad. i was watchin this thing on history channel one night and they were sayin how soy beans might be the miracle food that saves the world from starvation. i say we just ship them a grip of soy bean seeds

In my opinion, I believe our government could be holding charity events nationwide in order to raise money for such problems such as Africa. If it was possible for our government to hold a charity event without putting in our nations own money then it would be acceptable. Like everything else there should also be limits. We should be focusing on our own nations problems first. Many could agree that we have spent more time with problems like AIDS in Africa then we did spend time in New Orleans during the Huricane. Hundreds of people were left homeless but yet more focus were put towards other things in the world.

No i do not think that we should still be giving this amount of money to Africa with the belief that at least some of it is going to the needy.Instead i think that we should send people out there to help give the money to individual organizations, like Oprah has done in the past.

I think we should still provide aid to Africa. They just need to figure out a better way to keep track of the money. We need to make sure its going to the people that really need the help, if not our countries money is going to waist.

dartagnon said...

Yes, down and dirty, send them all we could. But, just to make sure it gets there we should have it escorted by a platoon of Marines. Semper Fi. When it apsolutely, positively has to be there... send it COD Marines {Curtisy Of Dem Marines}

no freaking way! we don't need the already wealthy mooching off our country. our country is already in debt and still digging. the last thing we need to do is be charitable to those who are not even responsible with our money!

Cody Parks said...

Heck no! I disagree because we need the money, apparently we aren't perfect money wise. With the all the economy problems, we don't need to. Don't get me wrong I lke to help, but when it's not being used the way intended. Then say no. Money isn't easy, handle with care. Yo creo que nosotros nos neccesitamos antes de otras paises, i dont know, haha. I disaagree with donating.

MichellePintor said...

NO,we souldnt send any aid to Africa if it is only going to be distributed among the wealthy and if we do send aid we should make sure that it gets to those who actually need it.

I believe we should still give the charity money to these countries. Even though America still has a lot of problems and needs, many other countries in the world are way worse off than ourselves. I believe we need to create an orginization that makes sure the money is getting into the hands of the people that need it though.

I think if the money is not reaching the people in need, then we should stop donating the money. If we are putting it in the rich warlords hands, then we are doing more damage than good. We need to find a way around that so we can actually help the people in need!

matt akiyama said...

i believe we should, however i think that we should crack down on making sure the people get the money. Not the wealthy people that pocket it. Also if the problem continued then i would cut off the charity and donations completely.

Robin's comment it great. I agree, our country has it's own damn problems, lets leave it to Oprah and Angelina Jolie to raise their babies and give them money.

i think we should still be giving money to them, but with some authority from "us" because it is our money. Have supervision over there to actually make sure that money is getting to the needy and if not, then to give the money to other people needy people in other countries.
