BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME

Ok, now let's talk movies. What I want to know here is your vote for your top three best movies of all time. Remember, even if you love a movie, try to think about it more objectively. Let's say, for example, that Date Movie is your favorite movie of all time. Most would agree that Date Movie should not be on an all time best list. You can do one of two things. Either admit that even though you like it, it cannot rank with the best movies you've ever seen, or, be bold, make an argument for why it is among the best. That would mean looking at the structure, writing, comedy, timing, filming, capturing of current social themes, or any other categories you want to find to argue why it should be considered. Believe me, if you want to make an argument, you can find reasons to support it (and then we may find reasons why you are wrong, too.).
So, here my list, in no partcular order: Apocalypse Now, Godfather (1 and 2, but that just counts as one, right, since I can't pick between them...and no, don't even think of throwing 3 in there), and Chinatown.
This is really tough though, because I love the following movies and want to put them on the list: Rocky, Valley Girl(go see this now!), Star Wars (I saw it nine times the year it came out...do people still do that?), Amelie (Audrey Toutou, hubba hubba), Fitzcarraldo, the Official Story, A Very Long Engagement, and Belle Epoque.
But the truth is, as much as I enjoyed them, they don't quite make it! Can we separate our enjoyment from our judgement? We must.
What are your nominees and, more importantly, why?

I would have to say the three best movies of all time are 1. crash (amazing movie) 2. the dark knight (also amazing) and 3. superbad (funniest movie of all time) your picks were good too Dr. Schmoll!! Except i still have never seen the godfather and people always tell me its the best movie.

Dr. Brett Schmoll said...

Good call, Evan. I might put Superbad in the funny but not necessarily "best" category. Why do you think it merits inclusion here?

THE DARK KNIGHT!!! It is amazing. It has to be that good to almost hit Titanic. Two other good movies are Alvin and the Chipmunks(my child side) and a new one called Eagle Eye. I wont ruin it for anyone because its new in theatres but is was pretty d*mn good. Another classic is Grease.

I love three movies: The Shawshank Redemption, Saving Private Ryan, and Forest Gump. These movies are all great movies, and they are not made cheap. I hate watching cheaply made movies. These are bomb!

I also have to say the Dark Knight was a great movie. Another movie that may not be in others top list, but is a great movie is all of the Rush Hours. It is a very funny movie.

Dr. Brett Schmoll said...

ok, but let's define what we mean by "great." Why are these choices great? ...and stay out of the kitchen :)
Give good reasons, just like you guys did with the stairs and Queenie.

I will have to agree with Dr. S on the Godfathers and then the other two would have to be Casablanca and 300. I saw 300 twice the day it came out back to back. Right after i watched the first showing i got tickets for the second showing. I then saw it 4 more times just not back to back.

I believe the top three movies of all time would include, 1. wedding Crashers, 2. Superbad, 3. The Dark knight. But I do believe that a great movie can differ from one person to another based on there interests and likes of movies.

Dr. Brett Schmoll said...

Aha, great question, Colin. Is it true? Is "greatness" only subjective, or are there some criteria that we can apply that can be divorced from our personal likes or dislikes? (by the way, this is going to come up again this quarter, hint hint, so keep it in your mind)
If it is all relative, then a DaVinci is no better than a stick figure on a chaulk board. Is that true? Is there something that makes great art great? Or is it just a community of dunderheaded intellectuals who say "ahhh" too much? You tell me.

I think that the best three movies ever made are The pursuit of happiness being one, a beautiful mind and girl interrupted. The first movie gives life's lessons and it shows the situations in which any one can end in but also overcome. The second movie depicts the story of John Nash based on a real story about him and his schizophrenia and it explains to the world this illness. The third movie shows how people define different illness and how we could all have a problem and not realize it, it really makes you think.

1) Fight Club; fight club has a dark feeling that I love in movies, yet there is some weird humor that most people don’t pick up on, I love the Neo-Platonism theme. Every time I see fight club I feel oddly inspired. And the acting and overall style in it was freaking sweet, in my personal opinion.
2) Garden State; Zach Braff is always awesome on scrubs and when I heard that he had a movie that is 100% serious I had to see it. Sure enough it is definitely on my top three. Whenever I watch it I feel like I have a strange connection with the main character. This may be why I enjoy this movie so much.
3) American History X; another dark story again with Edward Norton, but is an excellent story of redemption and has an interesting way of telling a story which I think is badass. And the ending always gets me.
Doc, your picks are good but I’m going to have to be honest, in my opinion The Godfather movies were very boring I watched all three of them in a matter of two days, and I took a nap in the middle of the 2nd one and it was still on.

Pulp Fiction, Fight Club and Departed. These movies just shocked me in a good way. I think if movie can surprise me, it is good.

Dr. Brett Schmoll said...

A couple of people have mentioned Fight Club...I, too, find that a compelling choice. It does, however, cull forth another question...when thinking of the "best" in something like movies, if we asked 100 women and 100 men to make a list of their top ten, would the responses be gendered, highly differentiated by the sex of the person making the choice? Fight Club, it seems to me--while it is a philosophically compelling, fascinating search for the soul of modern humanity--is more of a guy choice. Thoughts?

Bobby klagge said...

ive met my share of females who loved fight club, but these same girls i watched The Machinest, Braveheart and Sin City with so they may be an exception, but i would agree; fight club would be more appealing to guys then girls.

The Dark Knight, was so carefully written and so incredibly acted out.
Written. The plot is just so "Wow!" Unfortunately, Batman's love is played by Maggie Gyllenhaal as oppose to Katie Holmes, like in the first part, "Batman Begins", but it wasn't a spoiler. Yes, when the roles of characters and played by a different actor or actress, it ruins the movie, but not in this one. Everything else about the movie cancels it out. One forgets that such a negative negative has happened. And unexpectedly, Christopher wipes her off the face of the earth, (movie), by having her character die towards the end. This only brings the screenplay back to life and it gives one a reason to look forward to what other surprises might be in the third movie.
Acting. Heath Ledger could not have put out a better piece of work. So crudely funny, so smart, so crazy really. You can't help but to fall in love with his performance. Lets not let "The Joker" take all of the credit though. The movie is made such a masterpiece by wonderful performances from Christian Bale as "Batman", Michael Caine as "Alfred", Gary Oldman as "James Gordon", Morgan Freeman as "Lucius Fox", and Cillian Murphy as "Scarecrow".
Questions. another detail making "The Dark Knight" such a phenomenon is the questions it left us all with. Heath Ledger is dead, so how will the role of The Joker be played out or terminated. If continued, who will try to out perform Ledger's work? Will Batman Love again? Which nemesis of his will be present in the third movie?
Fact. The Dark Knight was IT!!

After narrowing down my list, i would have to say that the top three movies are: The Dark Knight(of course), Eagle Eye, and Pirates of the Carribean(all of them, can't choose between them). The Dark Knight was just WOAH! I think Heath Ledger gave an awesome performance. I coulndn't have imagined a better perfomance for the part of Joker, it blew my mind. Eagle Eye was a really good movie too. It makes you think about how much the world relies on technology. Is it really a good thing? How much privacy do we really have? I loved Pirates of the Carribean. Jack, played by Johnny Depp, is certainly and interesting character in the movie. It's just an overall great movie to enjoy with anyone, family, friends, or both at the same time. It's hillarious and full of action and drama.

My favorite movies are "Pulp fiction", "My girl", "The Secret Window", and "Misery". Pulp fiction I simply love because it's funny but also strange at the same time. I have to admit though that the acting skills of the supporting actors aren'tthe best. "My girl" is just a really sweet movie which I could watch over and over again. But it could also be too corny for some people. I think the "Secret Window" is actually a reall good movie. First of all, Johnny Depp is the main character. He plays fantastic. And also the plot is phenomenal. The tension is remained through the entire movie, and the ending is so suprising. I just love it. And finally, "Misery" I'm just a big fan of it because of Kathy Bates. Even though the movie is pretty old, and I could imagine too old for some, but the whole idea of it and the plot are so unique. Not just like the "new" horror movies.

Any movie that impacts your life in a positive way and really influences your life is considered one of the best movies of all time.

THe best movie I have seen would have to be Stop-Loss. I liked it because it leaves you thinking about our gov't and who your suppose to run to when you can't go to the police. The crazy thing is that what happens in the movie has really happen to thousands of people who have served their time in the army. I don't want to get in to too detail because then I ruin the movie for those who havent seen it. WATCH IT!!!!!!!!!

My 3 favorite movies are Catch Me If You Can, Stranger Than Fiction, and Little Miss Sunshine. I think movie critices are good judges because it is their job to watch movie. They know the criteria that goes into a good movie but that's not to say we as the public have to agree with them.

I think the best movie of all time is Titanic. It's an epic tear-jerker that blew everyone away with its amazing special effects. It is still the biggest box office hit ever. Plus, the main character is Leonardo DiCaprio; what could be better? haha.
