I would definitely have bigger desks. There is only so much room on the desks now. I would find a way to maybe arrange for more classes, so that there wouldn't be so many people in one class as it gets very crammed in the classrooms. I wouldn't make more classrooms, but instead make more classes as I like the small university setting.
CSUB is making great strides to improve its' image. It's going to take a long time to change people's negative perception of this campus, and there is low morale amongst the staff workers, but I believe it can be done. I feel very blessed to work here.
Our campus improvements should not be random. They should be a part of a cohesive vision that stems from a strategic plan. If we start willy nilly spending money on each new idea - bigger desks, new cafeteria, better landscaping - we will not demonstrably improve. What is our focus? What are we trying to achieve? We can not be the best at everything, we have limited resources and are in a location that for many people is not optimum (eg not UC San Diego or Santa Barbara). I propose that our vision shift to academic excellence, raising our admission standards, the quality of our teachers (tenure be damned), and dare I say it - the cost of our academic experience. Excellence comes at a price.
In my opinion the things that stand out at universitys are the appearance. If i could do something to change this university, i would add more art to this campus. I would also create a few rooms specifically for a "inbetween classes, homework room." we have a few cool art pieces around campuses, and the fountains really add a proffessional touch, but i want more!
Dr. Crazy Cat, I agree with you, we should have more of an academic focus, but apparently sports brings in money, and we are moving forward with Division I. I think the vision of excellence should be in the choice of classes offered and the professors teaching them. I think we should embrace being a "commuter campus" instead of trying to abolish that reputation. In our area of work, we are not allowed to say "commuter campus". Whatever! Lets work at improving what we have and what we probably will always be!
To make Cal State better I believe that there should be more clases focusing on entrepruenership. Moreover; there should be clubs in Cal State that focus on helping students luanch their own busineses and investing. In addition; Cal State should focus on doing a partnership with some real estate developers, and expanding their campus by being creative and maybe bringing in luxury hotels, condos, retail centers. Moreover; hire a PR firm to put Cal State on the map and let all of the United States know what Cal State has to offer.Furthermore; this will create revenue and jobs for Cal State and its students. Also; I believe that students would have a better perception of Cal State and feel good coming to an elite campus.
I've been here for almost three full quarters now, and I have to admit that I always despair of the school's bureaucracy. It's actually pretty funny that you have to go from department to department, from office to office to get one question answered. For example, since I'm an international student I wasn't sure if I have to take summer classes or not. I mean, it could be since my visa for the U.S. is limited. Anyway, I went to the international student office and asked the guy at the acceptance. He didn't know and couldn't also help me finding someone who knew. So I went to the student record office to see the lady who is responsible for the foreigners. She couldn't help me either. After two or three more trips around the campus I figured that I don't care anymore. If I had to take summer classes I wouldn't go just because no one could have given me an answer. Then why do we need all these departments and offices at all? We actually need a desk in the middle of the campus with a lady sitting behind it. This lady would just say "I'm sorry, I can't help you" to everyone who has a simple question. I wouldn't notice the difference. Furthermore, we would have actually have more classrooms, and therefore maybe more room in those.
I agree with the desks, and I would like elevators in the dorms because Moving heavy items to the third floor is difficult. I would also like some of the staff to be more friendly especially the people that work at financial aid they should help you without attitude. More parking closeto the classroom for the commuters. The University is small in comparison to many others and I wouldliketo see it expand and have more convinient things for students like stores on campus not vending machines. More Clubs and fundings.
It needs bigger classroom with bigger desk. I mean the english class is so crowded and i have long legs so i cant stretch cause ill be bumping into someone. Another thing is they should anounce when things are going to happen. I dont have time to go around school reading whats happening on campus.
I am an international student. To be honest, I feel that Cal State doesn't really treat international student fairly.
For the English requirement, I am facing my difficulties here. Before I got admitted to this school, I have taken TOEFL, IELTS, and GMAT which all scores show that I met the English proficiency requirement, otherwise I could not be accepted.
After I started my study here, I took the English placement test, but I didn't get good score because I can't read as fast as native people do. And when I tried to request more time for me to finish the test, I was told that I should apply to the Disability office in advance. I am NOT a disabled student.
I was placed in ENGL80 class, and this quarter I am taking ENGL100. As an international student, I pay $1100 per class ($226 per unit).
About GWAR, My writing part of GMAT is 4.5 out of 6 which already meets the exemption requirement for graduate students. But since I am an "UNDER"graduate student, I was told that my GMAT score cannot be used.
I understand that the EPT and English remedy classes are offered to make sure that students can use English to support the academic and professional purpose.
English is my second language. I am using the second language to study, and I am still maintaining a good standing with a 3.6 GPA for all my other classes. The English requirment drags my graduation progress. I have to stay one more quarter than what I planned just because one English class.
The school shouldn't set up the standard to international students as same as native-English-speaking people. These requirments make difficulties to international students' study progress.
Cal State should attract more excellent international students to improve the school's diversity and also financial income to against the negative impact from the budget cut. But these requirements block those international students out of Cal State campus.
I would definately focus on improving the school spirit. If you get more people to the sports games, the more money you will generate. If you look at the biggest schools with the most money, behind them is always a sports program that succeeds. If we were to bring in a football team with a stadium, this would improve the school spirit!
I agree 100% with Alex. I don't understand how a major Triple A University can brag so loud about this grand fitness center is while the students must sufer with these outrageous desk. Next time they want to bragg to the public about this vantastic center let them come see the real Cal State in the english classrooms. That will let them see the real Cal State.
I think that the campus is beautiful. I've transfered from BC and in my opinion Cal State is so much more aesthetically pleasing. I think the new rec. center will be a welcomed addition to Cal State!
To make CSUB better i would make the time between classes longer. I dont think that 5 minutes is an adequate amount of time to get all the way across campus especially if you are let out late. Like me on Wednesday, I have three classes in a row with five minutes in between each. Its not easy and i hardly get to take a bathroom break. Also we could make the processing of papers faster. I have been waiting for over a week to get my financial aid papers proccessed and i cant register untill they are completed. There are many many more but not enough space to right. But i think the education here so far is going my way.
I think they need to further the landscaping around the campus boundries. The landscaping in the middle of campus is nice but on the edges of campus there is nothing but dirt. Also there needs to be more activities for students to be involved in. I believe that if there were more activities, it would bring the students closer together and create a better university.
I definitely agree with the wifi. I also think that a football team would make Cal State a much closer school. BC games bring families and friends as well as students and staff together. With a football team, we'd be a much closer school and i think it might encourage us to attend more athletic activities and support our fellow athletes.
Well I would love to see more students involved. Athletic games are free to csub students and yet no one comes to them. the university would be better if students support other students.
The only thing i would change to make Cal State better is the air conditioning. I would fix it to where the temperature would be at least in a more relaxing temperature not so freezing cold.
We need more computer labs. Everytime i want to use the computer there is never one available. They should also have more seating for students outside.
To make cal state better, i'd make the buildings better. Also, i'd plant more trees and make the scenery less "dead." Also, i would add a football team, because football games bring big crowds and allow for school spirit to grow.
first of all, i would add more classes at a suitable time. Next i would add at least two left handed desks in every class. every class i've had, i can't find one and it makes writing and note taking very difficult.

One little thing that I beleive is that the classrooms are somewhat small. Our english classroom is very small. That's my opinion though.

i would most deffinately agree...wifi across campus!
that would be totally amaaziing:D
In order to make this university better i would rebuild the dorms and redo the cafeteria/commons.
Jasmin!!!!!!! totally right, I went to 5 different people, and when I got there they sent me back to other people!!! It was so terrivble.

We could make Cal State better by getting new dorms.I just wish they were a little bigger. Bigger makes better.
wifi throughout campus for sure, and we're getting a gym so that's a huge improvement!Easier access to counselors
I definitely agree with the wifi.

i would make the internet connections in dorms faster and have wifi throughout campus....also the commons caferteria isnt very appetizing.
We need more computer labs.
Everytime i want to use the computer there is never one available. They should also have more seating for students outside.
not the rigth topic but...
how many journals are we supposed to have?
To make cal state better, i'd make the buildings better. Also, i'd plant more trees and make the scenery less "dead." Also, i would add a football team, because football games bring big crowds and allow for school spirit to grow.
I think that some of the buildings should be remodeled, DDH for example. And I agree with Evan; we definitely need more school spirit.
i would like yo add more food places throughout the campus to eat in and more coffee shops and a weight room!
We could make it better by building new dorms that can hold a lot more people. Dorms that are actually nice so people would like to live in them.
first of all, i would add more classes at a suitable time. Next i would add at least two left handed desks in every class. every class i've had, i can't find one and it makes writing and note taking very difficult.
