Is this quote true?

"You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture.
Just get people to stop reading them."
~Ray Bradbury

Yes it's true; people aren't forced to read all books of culture. The book is just out there for your resource/information. I also think what Bradbury is trying to say is to save books so that future generations can have the choice of reading about other important cultures.

I think its false: because you cant get people to stop reading books. As long as their are books out their (regardless of what they are about) theirs always going to be some who is going to read it. SO if you dont burn them than their going to be available for others to read. but theres other ways to learn about cultures like the internet but thats a different subject i guess

I agree with the quote, I believe that it is much better to get people not read certain book than destroying them because at least you are not eliminating someone’s freedom of speech and press you are just persuading some one else and when you convince someone else to stop reading something even if the book was there then they would not read it.

i think that this quote is not true. There will be people reading books until you destroy them.

I think this quote is false. I don't think you can destroy a culture by not reading. If you take a look at banned books, students aren't allowed to read certain books at school, but at home it's a different story. I personally don't think that you can destroy a culture...

yes its true, People dont read books unless its for research. The culture is destroyed when its own people dont practice it. Its not necessary to burn books.

It is false; there isn't any record of some existing cultures. Books are simply a form of acknologment towards the culture but wheter they exist or not the culture doesn't die until it's people stop practicing it. A perfect example is WWII when the Navajo dialect was used as a code to communicate because there wasn't any written record of it.

I totally agree with this quote. I think Bradbury is referring to the fact that some poeple believe in what they were told to believe. For me, it criticizes the stereotyped and closed-minded thinking of some people. Therfore, this qoute could be an appeal to the critical thinking. People shouldn't rather be so stucked in their opinion. Furthermore, they might need to let go from what they already know and consider as well tried... I hope that makes sense ;)

to be honest with you i have no clue what this quote is suppose to mean. but i do feel you can not destroy a culture...and books make up the history of a culture to some extent...

A huge part of our culture would be destroyed if books were not a factor in our lives. Books shape our minds, remind us of our history, and so much more. I think thats all Bradbury is trying to say.

There's a related quote that I'll insert here. I do not recall who exactly said this, but the jist of it is as follows:
A person who DOES NOT READ is as poor off as a person who CANNOT READ. Get it? The point of Bradbury and of this quote is this, if you do not read, you will be a victim of those who do. How you like them apples?

It just depends on the person, in my opinion. People will read, but no matter what, they will always have their own opinions about things.

with books or not, a culture won't be destroyed just by people not reading the books. a culture is a way of life and the people is what makes it unique, in a way. Just by burning some books that have research and a lot of information on a certain culture, won't destroy it; because the books aren't what make the culture a culture, its the people that

Yes/ but then again of course if convince them not to you may as well tell them to read it, then they wont. Burning books are like trying to burn history it happened, now it shouldn't be done/ read.

it is so true. burning a book and people not reading them is the same thing. with out books you dont know what your culture is. you dont know who you are.

Yes, I think it's true. Actually books are dead and mean nothing if no people to read it. Books are meanful vehicles of delivering cultural spirits and thoughts only when people read them. A person who writes books wants other people to read it. People who read books want to get information, knowledge, experience or whatever they want to learn from the books. So if people stop reading books, the books just means waste paper, that will destroy a culture.

I don't think you can destroy a culture just by getting people to stop reading. Even if you go as far as burning all books, people still think for themselves. It might even promote discussion between people. But people will still have ideas they will just reach smaller groups than a book. A book just puts on paper what a person is thinking in their head. And thinking of it that way might even enhace a culture. People would voice their opinions more.
While I guess the power could be abused by those reading, people still think for themsleves. In the case of Brave New World a new culture was being formed the people did not read books but there were some within that culture that were thinking for themselves, and shared those opinions with others.

I completely agree. People gain more knowledge and insight by reading than those who don't. Books were written for a purpose and should be opened.

I think everyone will still read until books are destroyed. i don't believe books will be destroyed, i believe the use of books will die out because of all the new technology.

aka the internet.

the qoute is true, because people are not forced to read a book. people have their own choice to read for their own resources and information.

burning books would erase a cultures history. and the culture would need to start over. if you were to convince people to stop reading books entirely then the culture would crumble.

MarthaRodriguez said...

i think its true because eventhough i dont like reading books that are for pure research without them i wouldnt know alot of things

I agree with the quote because those who don't read about the different cultures in this world, will miss out on a lot of valuable information that they could have possibly shared with their future children. That will then create a pattern meaning that the information from the books will be lost forever from any generation.

Danielle Simpson said...

I disagree with this quote. I don't think it is possible to destroy a culture by not reading. Books are just a form of written evidence about a culture but whether they exist or not the culture doesn't die until it's people stop practicing it.

matt akiyama said...

its true people arent forces to read books this quote is just saying people should save books for the future generations so that books that may seem broing to us now may have a big importance in the furture.

i agree with first part. but i disagree with second part. people do not have to stop reading them, they are out there for information. It just depends on the type of person they are. If your interested you read if, not, then it doesnt mean its bad.
